El Presidente norteamericano anunció por televisión el regreso de 5.700 soldados del país árabe para la Navidad próxima, señalando que ello es posible por el éxito que se está logrando.

El mandatario de EE. UU. delineó lo que denominó éxitos de la ‘oleada’ en Irak, y planes para retirar parte de las tropas. Bush dijo: “Algunos dicen que los beneficios que logramos en Irak aparecen demasiado tarde (…) Nunca es demasiado tarde para dar un golpe a al-Qaeda (…), para avanzar en la libertad (…), para apoyar a nuestras tropas en un combate que pueden ganar”.
Bush pidió por una “relación duradera” con Irak, que mantendría las fuerzas norteamericanas allí “más allá de mi presidencia”, diciendo que un Irak libre y amistoso es esencial para la seguridad de la región y de EE. UU. Calificó a la guerra en Irak como una parte vital de una estrategia en Medio Oriente para derrotar a al-Qaeda y contrarrestar a Irán.
En este sentido, Bush advirtió que EE. UU. no debe abandonar Irak mientras está “luchando por su supervivencia”.
Con anterioridad, la Casa Blanca había comunicado que Bush iba a comprometerse a traer a casa a 5.700 soldados de Irak para Navidad. En este sentido, Bush afirmó en su discurso al público que iba a seguir los consejos de David Petraeus, de reducir los niveles de tropas a 15 brigadas de combate de 20 actuales, para julio. Una brigada cuenta con alrededor de 4.000 soldados.
