El 16 de agosto de 1923, fue establecido en Chile por decreto el día de la raza. El 2000 por la Ley Nº 19668 recibe el nombre de Día del Descubrimiento de Dos Mundos.
Sin embargo el descubrimiento de América y el encuentro de dos mundos diversos provocaron un choque con la resistencia mapuche y el proceso de pacificación de la Araucanía. Para los pueblos indígenas los españoles llegaron a ocupar sus tierras para luego apoderarse de ellas.
