Gabriela Mistral nació en 1914 de la fusión simbólica de los poetas Gabriele D\'Annuzio y Frédéric Mistral, cuando Lucila Godoy Alcagaya -profesora primaria de la IV región- obtuvo el primer premio en el concurso literario de los Juegos Florales organizado por la Federeación de Estudiantes de la Universidad de Chile.
Lucila, era entonces una mujer de 25 años, titulada tras serle validados sus estudios por la Escuela Normal número 1 de Santiago, luego de haber trabajado por años en escuelas rurales de las comunas del Valle del Elqui.
La FECH premió sus Sonetos de la Muerte, donde ya se notan los temas que Gabriela desarrollaría durante toda tu trayectoria poética. Desde entonces, y hasta 1922, cuando fue editado su primer poemario, Desolación, Lucila ejerció la pedagogía prácticamente en todas las regiones del país: Antofagasta, Santiago, Temuco, Punta Arenas... Ese año fue invitada por el gobierno mexicano y así comenzó un periplo por el mundo que seguiría hasta su muerte en 1957.
La obra de Mistral está cargada de Dios, de muerte, de amor y desolación. Sus obras Tala (1938), en gran parte dedicado a su madre, Lagar (1954) -donde se lee gran parte de la II guerra mundial, Lecturas para mujeres (1923) y varios otros le valieron reconocimiento mundial. En 1945, el rey Gustavo V de Suecia le hizo entrega del Premio Nóbel de Literatura, la máxima distinción de la literatura mundial. Asimismo, el Mills College of Oakland californiano la distingió con el grado Doctor Honoris Causa en 1947 y sólo en en 1951 su propio país la reconoció con el Premio Nacional de Literatura.
Lucila y Gabriela murieron en Nueva York hace exactamente medio siglo: el 10 de enero de 1957.
