En dicho acto se premiaron a todas las mujeres sobresalientes de la Región del Maule, debido a que se han destacado en distintos ámbitos tales como vida social, cultura, política y economía. Asimismo por su compromiso por la igualdad de oportunidades entre hombre y mujeres.
Se otorgó el premio Elena Cafarena Morice, a ocho mujeres de la zona en las siguiente categorías; Sociedad Civil, Maria Angeliza Veloso, Académica, Vivian Muria y Estrella Albornoz; Deporte, Jessy Reyes; Medios de comunicación, Irene Albornoz; Pueblos Originarios, Maria Chiguay; Artista, Mauricio Saavedra; Derechos Humanos, Silvia Espinoza.
Para el Intendente Alexis Sepúlveda es importante que las mujeres puedan desarrollar responsabilidades en cualquier ámbito. “En la región tememos un gabinete de una fuerte presencia femenina, que son tremendas profesionales y han cumplido con todos los perfiles.”
La Directora de la Fundación para la promoción y desarrollo de la mujer, PRODEMU, Carolina Jacques, señaló que le pareció bien las categorías que se dio el premio Cafarena, ya que se muestra que las mujeres están abarcando varios espacios dentro de la sociedad.
“En el país se ha avanzado mucho en beneficios para la mujer, como la ley de violencia familiar, el tema de las salas cunas, la ley de amamantamiento, pero creo que aun queda camino para realizar cosas, para que el plan de igualdad de oportunidad entre hombres y mujeres se llegue a realizar.”

nocer quién fué la Sra. Elena Caffarena Morice vda.
Jiles. Nació en Iquique un 23 de Marzo del año 1903,
en el seno de una familia de esforzados inmigrantes
italianos. Fué casada con el abogado Don Jorge Jiles,
de filiación comunista. Su carácter de mujer combatiba
quedó de manifiesto en la década de los 20 liderando
la ocupación de la Facultad de Derecho. Fundadora el
año 1937 del Movimiento pro Emancipación de la
Mujer Chilena (MEMCH), luchó incansablemente por el
voto femenino, que le tardó casi 20 años hasta que se
aprobó el año 1949. Antes había participado activa-
mente en la campaña presidencial de Don Pedro
Aguirre Cerda en el año 1939. Fundó el periódico
La Mujer Nueva, bajo la dirección de la periodísta
Sra. Marta Vergara, con un tono combativo reivindi-
cacionista, hablando de la importancia del sufragio
femenino, de la carestía de la vida, del analfabetismo,
de la anticoncepción y el aborto. El año 1980 funda
el CODEPU, en apoyo de los perseguidos políticamen-
te. La líder feminista incluye en su familia a la periodís-
ta Pamela Jiles y al ex Comandante del Ejército, gene-
ral (r) Don Ricardo Izurieta. Falleció en Santiago el 18
de Julio del 2003.
