El estudio, difundido esta semana en Bruselas, señala además que el aumento de la temperatura entre 2 y 3 grados durante los próximos años, provocaría también una caída de la producción agrícola a nivel mundial.
De producirse esta situación, además de las muertes por olas de calor extremo, muchas poblaciones enfrentarían una importante falta de alimentos.
Pero además de los riesgos directos sobre la salud humana, el documento destaca que el nivel del mar podría subir entre 4 y 6 metros, debido al derretimiento de los glaciares. Esta situación pondría en peligro a miles de islas en todo el mundo y numerosas poblaciones costeras tanto de países desarrollados, como de regiones en desarrollo.
Durante la presentación del documento, uno de sus autores, el Dr. Martin Parry, señaló que el cambio climático va a ocasionar daños peores de lo que se pensaba.
“Por primera vez no estamos teniendo en cuenta modelos supuestos, sino pruebas empíricas tomadas sobre el terreno, que pueden ser medidas” señaló Parry.
El Grupo Intergubernamental de Expertos sobre el Cambio Climático destacó que la emisión de gases de efecto invernadero es en gran medida la causa de esta situación.
